About the Author

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) wrote and illustrated such popular books as The Doubtful Guest, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, and The Headless Bust.  "The Doubtful Guest" is a story of an odd looking creature in "white canvas shoes" making an appearance one wild winter night. Written in couplets, this rhyming book is fun to read as it is entertaining. Each illustration depicts the guest in a strangely interesting situation. Where did this creature come from and when will it leave?! No one knows. If you like this style of book, check out this new fairytale about a little girl and a haunted house: The Stumps of Flattop Hill

"Quirky" barely begins to describe the work of Edward Gorey who, for much of his productive life was suspected of being Victorian, British, or dead. Gorey (who passed away in 2000) was none of these, but he did very much create his own world, and "The Doubtful Guest" is as good a place as any to begin exploring it. His work is a little difficult to describe in words other than his own. Some idea of the content may be gleaned from the diminutive scarved and sneakered furry creature on the cover, and this line from the end of the story:"It came seventeen years ago, and to this day, it has shown no intention of going away."Enjoy.

This book is seemingly childlike, but it is quite deep. If you want everything spelled out for you, read Dr. Seuss. This is a grownup book, one that makes you think. I could tell you what I think it is about, but what it means to me could be quite different from what it means to you. The openness to interpretation is what differentiates Edward Gorey from children's literature.

Pocket sized Perfection. I can now see the reason there were talks in place of turning this book into a tv series. The illustrations are rich, delicious, luxurious. And the rhyming text is absolute delight. Perfect little treat for devoted fans of all things Edward Gorey.

This is a charming story of a questionable character who appears out of nowhere and endears "it"self by simply being itself: odd, personable, quirky, and tenacious. The pen and ink drawings by Edward Gorey are impeccable (his formal training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago lasted only one year), showing a natural gift for precision and imagination; they are used exclusively as signatures of the PBS series "Mystery." The Victorian/Edwardian theme creates another world, placing the reader in the late 19th, early 20th century of elegance and propriety, making the mysterious appearance of this peculiar "Doubtful Guest" even more peculiar. The fact that Mr. Gorey created these drawings and the story they tell in 1957 is testimony to its timeless, endearing, enduring quality.

This story in poem form amuses me greatly, as I have an odd tenant in my house who has been with me for 14 years and has behaviors that remind me of the creature in the tale. I showed it to him and he laughed uproariously. The writing is quite clever, smacks of truth, and rhymes nicely.

What is unique about the author are his drawings. The drawings in this book AR postcard size and bus the fine details are difficult if not impossible to discern. If you really want something by this artist oh, look elsewhere.

This is my single favorite Edward Gorey book, partially because of the amusing couplets it is written in, but mostly because of the appearance of the guest himself, which never ceases to amuse me. The concept of a strange creature who mysteriously visits and decides to stay (seventeen years) while exercising odd whims (like fits in which he removes all towels from the bath or hiding inside a soup tureen) is particularly suited to Gorey's odd brand of humor (although it is not one of his more unusual books, by any stretch of the imagination.)I have liked Edward Gorey since I was in my teens, and still find him as unique and entertaining as ever. This is my very favorite Gorey book, and would make an excellent introduction to one of the oddest cartoonists of the twentieth century.

What This Book Is About

This book is designed to improve your vocabulary. The focus is on the advanced vocabulary you will need for the GRE revised General Test. Having a well-developed vocabulary is useful in many settings and especially critical to successful performance on the GRE. In particular, the Verbal Reasoning section relies heavily on an understanding of advanced vocabulary.

The quality of your responses to the Analytical Writing prompts depends in part on your knowing vocabulary that allows you to express your ideas clearly.

We use a contextual approach to teach new vocabulary. This approach does not rely on conventional flash-card methods. Rather, new words are introduced in meaningful contexts—i.e., in passages, most of which consist of brief narratives. Numerous exercises, activities, and puzzles are then provided in order to reinforce your understanding of the new words. Through this approach, learning new words should be fun rather than just being limited to the use of flash cards and drills.

Outline of the Book

The book consists of six chapters:

Chapters 1 and 2 provide context-based vocabulary instruction, along with exercises, activities, and games.

Chapter 3 consists of challenging crossword puzzles that test your understanding of what you learned in Chapters 1 and 2.

Chapter 4 introduces strategies and resources you can use to build your vocabulary further.

Chapter 5 presents a brief introduction to the GRE Verbal Reasoning section.

Chapter 6 describes strategies that will help you do your best on the GRE Verbal Reasoning section.

Guide to the First Two Chapters

Following is some information that will be helpful as you read Chapters 1 and 2—the chapters that provide instruction, and are the longest chapters in the book.

Chapters 1 and 2 consist of 12 units apiece. Each unit begins with a story in which advanced vocabulary words are underlined. You will be asked to guess the meanings of these words, and the meanings will then be provided.

Next you will work through a series of exercises, activities, and games that reinforce and test your understanding of the new words. These exercises and so on consist of matching, fill-in-the-blanks, puzzles, and more.

In Chapters 1 and 2, every third unit will consist of a review that provides additional exercises, activities, and games that cover what you learned in the previous two units. Most of the review units will also introduce one or two new words. Answers to all of the exercises, activities, and games in the main units and review units are provided at the end of each chapter.
